Welcome to our educational series about the FLOURISH System, our collaborative approach to designing impactful learning experiences. In this first article, we’ll explore the foundational components of F and L: Foundation & Focus, Leverage, Layer, and Logic.

As you embark on your journey to create transformative learning experiences, the first step is to establish a solid foundation. Let’s explore how to lay this groundwork and set your organization up for success.

F – Foundation and Focus

STRATEGY

Start by defining what your organization, team, or individuals want to achieve. By focusing on your specific goals and desired outcomes, you can ensure your learning initiatives align with your broader strategic objectives.

Ask yourself:

  • What are the business goals driving this initiative?
  • What tangible outcomes are desired?
  • Who are the stakeholders, and how will success be measured?

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Building on the strong foundation of clear goals, the next step is to deeply understand your learners. Target Audience Profiling helps you delve into their:

  • Needs
  • Motivations
  • Preferences
  • Perceptions
  • Behaviors
  • Accessibility
  • Learning Context
  • Collaboration Potential

By gaining insights into these areas, you can tailor your content to meet specific needs and preferences, fostering a more engaging and effective learning environment.

L – Leverage, Layer & Logic

With a solid foundation of clear goals and a deep understanding of your learners, the next step is to design an engaging learning experience. This involves leveraging existing resources and layering diverse modalities (eLearning, videos, etc.) to create a rich learning experience. These components are crucial for creating engaging and effective learning experiences.

LEVERAGE

Content Audit: Identify existing resources (internal materials, external courses, articles, etc.) that can be repurposed or reused.
Expert Contributions: Tap into the knowledge of subject matter experts (SMEs), your team members, and others who can contribute content or feedback.

LAYER

  • Modality Mix: Incorporate a variety of learning formats such as: eLearning, videos, readings, simulations, hands-on activities, visual aids and instructor-led training.
  • Microlearning: Break down content into smaller, digestible units of learning delivered in various formats such as: videos, infographics and interactive quizzes.
  • Gamification: Add elements of fun and competition to increase engagement and tap into intrinsic motivators like the desire for challenge, social connection, or a sense of accomplishment.
  • Logical Design and Development:
    • Sequencing to arrange content in a logical order that facilitates understanding.
    • Engagement to incorporate interactive activities and elements that keep learners interested.
    • Accessibility design principles to make content that is accessible to all learners, regardless of their abilities.

By following these initial steps in the FLOURISH System, you can plant the seeds of success for your learning initiatives. Remember the importance of foundation and focus, leveraging resources, layering modalities, and logical design.
