People often ask me the meaning and significance behind our name. Learn to Flourish.
It took me forever to come up with the name! I actually went without a company name for many years because the perfect one hadn’t come to me yet.
Then in 2017, I picked my personal word of the year. Have you ever done that? Picked a theme word for the year? Something to guide you and set your intent for the year. I’m super into that kind of thing. I love personal development – meditation, journaling, exercise, joyful living.
The word that came to me was Flourish. As soon as I wrote the word down I immediately realized that this was the word that I had been waiting for as the name for my business.
At that point, I did a quick brainstorm on some name variations for a potential name and I wrote down my ideas in my journal. Here were some of my first ideas:
- Flourish Learning
- Flourish Solutions
- Flourish Learning and Communications
- Learn with Flourish
- The Flourish Approach
In the end I shared my name idea in my favorite female entrepreneur group the Biz Chix Coop. And my good friend Shelly Warren, the host of the Stacking your Team podcast, helped me come up with the winning name!
Learn to Flourish
The idea behind Learn to Flourish is that learning is a journey. It is a process.
My original logo for Learn to Flourish had an arrow under the word “to” to visually represent the journey.
As someone who works in an education role you are going to help people learn by planting seeds. One of your most important jobs is to inspire your audience.
Next the learner is responsible to nourish these seeds. By taking action on what they have learned, and paying it forward by teaching and inspiring others.
Then the seeds take root and the learner flourishes becoming more resilient and stronger.
Ultimately to lead a rich and fulfilled life we are always in this cycle of continuous learning. Learn Nourish Flourish.
Here are some diagrams from my journal where I sketched out this idea.
And here are some lovely sketches on the next page from my youngest daughter Katie who wanted to help out!
So that’s the story of how the name for my company came to be. Learn to Flourish.
In the early days of Learn to Flourish, I didn’t work with a marketing company to help me with my branding and logo. I just did it myself. I created the first iteration the Learn to Flourish logo by myself using….. Wait for it, wait for it – PowerPoint.
I used my own DIY branding for quite a while before I got my amazing new branding working with Lindsey Johnson from Verity&Co who is brilliant at branding, copywriting and web design.
But my initial branding and logo, I did by myself using PowerPoint.
Did you know that PowerPoint can be used as a very effective graphic creation and graphic editing tool? I use it all the time.
In this week’s Learn to Flourish micro-learning tutorial, we show you step by step how to create a graphic in PowerPoint that you can save as image file to use anywhere else. On your business card, on posters and brochures, on your website, in your social media. Anywhere!
Here’s my Learn to Flourish DYI logo in action on my early business cards.
You can do it! Have a look at the micro-learning tutorial. Follow the steps, create a graphic and then please share with me what you come up with. I would love to see your creations!
